Matt Soat Wins Top Prize of $50,000 Playing the "Super Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Spencer man decided to play a "Super Crossword" instant-scratch game over his lunch break and ended up winning the 18th of 24 top prizes of $50,000.
Matt Soat, 21, said he was installing garage doors for his employer, Advanced Door Systems, when he and his coworkers decided to break for lunch at Cargo Express, 217 W. Third St. in Peterson. When he scratched his ticket, he initially thought he had only won $100.
"[The cashier] rings it up and she's like, 'How much did you think you won?' And I'm like, 'A hundred?' And she's like, 'Well guess again. Not a hundred. You just won $50,000!'" Soat said. "And I just started freaking out. I was shaking."
Soat called his girlfriend, Haley Klingenber, to tell her the good news.
"I'm like, 'Babe, you will not believe what just happened,'" Soat said. "She's like, 'what?' and I'm like, 'I just won $50,000.' And she's like, 'No you didn't!'"
Soat ended up having to send Klingenber a picture of his winning ticket in order for her to believe the news. He also had some convincing to do when he called his boss to tell him why he needed the day off on Friday to claim his prize.
"He's like, 'Well you're giving me half, right?'" Soat said with a laugh as he claimed his prize at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.
Soat and Klingenber have a six-month-old son. Soat said he is planning to use some of his winnings to look into buying a house for their growing family.Return to top↑
