DES MOINES, Iowa - A sign in a store window in a Dubuque woman's neighborhood prompted her to check her Powerball ticket and discover she had won a $10,000 prize.

Maggie Winkel, 31, said her husband, Dirk, told her about the sign at Hartig Drug Company, 1600 University Ave. in Dubuque, where they purchase their tickets, when he came home from his walk.

"He walked by and there was a sign that said someone had won," Winkel said. "So we checked our tickets and it turned out we did win!"

The Winkels used one of the lottery's self-check machines to validate their ticket before driving straight to the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday to claim their prize from the Feb. 6 Powerball drawing.

"It's exciting," Winkel said. "That's why we already came down here instead of waiting a while. I didn't want to lose it."

Winkel said she and Dirk have shared the news with their parents, who are excited for them.

"We've never won anything, so it's kind of neat,"she said.

Winkel, who teaches special education at Dubuque Community Schools, said she is planning to save her winnings for now.

The winning numbers in the $217.2 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Feb. 6 were 5-27-36-38-41 and Powerball 12. A ticket sold in Virginia won the jackpot that night.

Winkel won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had she added the Power Play® to her ticket, Winkel would have multiplied her win to $40,000.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
