DES MOINES, Iowa - An Ottumwa man was expecting to cash a $100 prize on his "Bingo Times 10" instant-scratch ticket, but the retail employee who validated his ticket let him know he had won quite a bit more.

Dennis Hall, 52, claimed the 27th of 34 prizes of $25,000 in Bingo Times 10 at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines on Tuesday.

"The gal at the gas station scanned it and she was real quiet for a little bit and she said, 'You won twenty-five thousand,'" Hall said. "And I said, 'No, that's got to be a mistake!'"

Hall had his ticket validated while on break from work in Oskaloosa where he is an assistant plant manager. When he returned to work, he didn't last long before heading out for the day.

"I decided it was time to go to Des Moines to the lottery headquarters and verify that it was a winning ticket," Hall said.

On his way to Des Moines, Hall stopped to tell his wife, Nancy.

"I was pretty excited, so I had to let her know," Hall said. "I just told her, 'We gotta go to Des Moines!'"

Hall said Nancy was in shock and couldn't really grasp what was happening until he showed her the ticket. He joked that other people he has told need photos of the ticket for proof.

Hall purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 1911 17th Ave. in Oskaloosa. Hall said he is planning to use some of his winnings to pay bills as well as celebrate a little.

"I'm the kind of person who normally doesn't win much, so I was pretty shocked," he said.
