DES MOINES, Iowa - After letting his Powerball tickets accumulate in his wallet for a few months, a Des Moines man decided to check his numbers and discovered he'd won a $10,000 prize.

Greg Jones, 58, said he was never expecting a $10,000 prize to pop up on his computer screen from the drawing on Jan. 26.

"It's like, 'Hey, I know this is something, but I don't know what it is,'" Jones said. "But… $10,000!"

Jones said he was able to keep the news to himself until his wife, Kristi, came home from work that night.

"I just had Kris sit down at the computer and I said, 'Here, take a look at this,'" Jones said. "And she basically had the same reaction that I did."

Jones, who is self-employed doing landscape architecture, said he hadn't checked his tickets for a while because life has just been too busy, but he's sure glad he did. He said he hasn't quite decided how to use his winnings yet.

"We have plenty of things to spend it on," Jones said.

Jones claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He purchased his winning ticket at Dahl's, 4343 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines.

The winning numbers in the $132.5 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Jan. 26 were 3-22-26-41-49 and Powerball 18.

There was no jackpot winner for that drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $123 million.

Jones won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Jones would have multiplied his win to $40,000.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
