Mickeal Taylor of Montezuma Claims Big Prize From Feb. 23 Hot Lotto® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Poweshiek County man says the $10,000 prize he won in the Hot Lotto game is just getting him started - he intends to win the jackpot.
"I've been playing for years. That's the warm up," Mickeal Taylor of Montezuma said with a laugh as he claimed his prize Wednesday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Taylor, 53, who owns the Montezuma Super Valu at 201 S. Front St. in Montezuma, bought his winning ticket at his own store. He said that shortly after the Feb. 23 Hot Lotto drawing, Kevin Bromley, the lottery district sales representative for his store, mentioned that a $10,000-winning ticket had been sold there.
"And I jokingly said to him that it's probably mine, I haven't checked it yet," Taylor said. "And while he was still there, I went ahead and checked it just to see. And there it was!"
Taylor said they both were shocked by the news.
Taylor's $10,000 winning ticket came close to winning it all in the Feb. 23 Hot Lotto drawing, matching the first five numbers but missing the Hot Ball. The winning numbers in the $1.93 million jackpot drawing that night were: 7-15-31-34-37 and Hot Ball 14.
Hot Lotto players choose five numbers from a pool of 39 and another number, called the Hot Ball, from a pool of 19. The Hot Lotto jackpot starts at $1 million and grows until someone wins it. Tickets in the game cost $1. Hot Lotto drawings are held at about 9:40 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays, just before the Powerball® drawings.
Players can multiply their non-jackpot prizes by three by purchasing the Hot Lotto with Sizzler option. The cost is $1 per play. Had Taylor added the Sizzler to his ticket, he would have multiplied his win to $30,000.
Taylor, who is married and has three children, said he and his wife are putting his prize winnings into savings.
"I think we're just going to put it in the bank for now and save it for a rainy day," he said.
There was no jackpot winner in the Feb. 23 drawing. The Hot Lotto jackpot has grown to an estimated $3 million for Saturday's drawing.
