Helen Leonard Claims Big Prize in 'Game Book' Scratch Ticket
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Carroll woman said she just had a feeling she should buy a lottery scratch ticket and she ended up winning a $10,000 prize.
"I'm not a gamer, but every once in a while, you just kind of like get this urge and you think, 'I better do it.' So I did," Helen Leonard said as she claimed her prize Thursday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Leonard won the fifth of six prizes of $10,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Game Book" instant-scratch game. The Game Book's top prize is $100,000.
Leonard, 58, who works as an inspector at United Technologies Corp. in Carroll, said she bought her winning ticket at East Side Shell, 1515 Plaza Drive in Carroll, and played her ticket in her car. She immediately went to her sister's house to get a second opinion.
"I said, 'What do you think of this?' I think thumbs' up!" Leonard recalled. "And so she looked at it and we both started crying."
Leonard's sister, Jeanne Hack of Carroll, accompanied her as she claimed her prize. It was an extra-special day for the pair, as it was Hack's 61st birthday.
Game Book is a $20 scratch game. Players have the chance to win prizes on eight games spread across six pages, all in one book. The Game Book will be void if any pages are separated from the book. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 2.52.
Two top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in the Game Book, along with one prize of $10,000, more than 110 prizes of $1,000 and thousands of prizes from $75 to $500.
Leonard said that she and her husband will likely put her winnings into savings for now.
"We have some home repairs, we want to upgrade some stuff, and that's still being debated," she said. "We want to make the most of our bucks, so we'll see what's first."Return to top↑
