Jerry McCullough Wins $10,000 Prize in Saturday's Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Council Bluffs man went to his local gas station to check his Powerball ticket and got a nice $10,000 surprise.
Jerry McCullough, 64, said he asked the clerk if he won a prize for matching five numbers on his Powerball ticket.
"He said, 'Well, let me see your ticket,'" McCullough said. "All of a sudden he handed it back and he says, 'Well, you won $10,000.' And I just about dropped right there on the floor."
McCullough purchased his winning ticket at Bucky's Express, 15 N. 16th St. in Council Bluffs.
"It shows you that people can win," McCullough said.
McCullough, who works as a delivery man for Pizza Hut, said after he had his ticket verified, he wanted to share the news but ran into a slight problem.
"I forgot my phone at home so I couldn't call anybody," he said.
After McCullough got home, he was able to share his good news.
"I just called a friend over here and it went from there," he said. "Within an hour everybody knew."
McCullough claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
McCullough said he plans to put his winnings in the bank for now.
"It's gonna stay there and kind of, you know, when the bills come, pay 'em," he said.
The winning numbers in the $338.3 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Saturday were: 17-29-31-52-53 and Powerball 31.
One ticket sold in New Jersey won the jackpot for that night's drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $40 million.
McCullough won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, McCullough would have multiplied his win to $40,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
