Paul Allman Wins Big Prize in Wednesday's Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Keokuk County man bought a vanilla malt at his granddaughter's request and also decided to buy a couple of lotto tickets while he was there.
Paul Allman, who is from Hedrick, ended up winning a $10,000 prize in Wednesday's Powerball drawing thanks to the unexpected trip to his local retailer.
"My granddaughter was over at the house and she decided she wanted a vanilla malt. I said, 'Oh, I don't know about that,'" Allman explained. "And I sat around there a little while and pretty soon I said, 'Well, I guess I can go get you one.'"
Allman, 77, said he has a special combination of birthdays and other numbers he plays when buying lotto tickets.
"The next morning, I got up, after buying the ticket, and picked up the Ottumwa Courier that I get there and it had those numbers in there," Allman said. "They all matched up but one."
Allman purchased his winning ticket at Hedrick Sinclair, 103 E. Sixth St. in Hedrick.
Allman, who is retired, said he and his wife, Delores, have a few ideas on how to best use their winnings.
"I've got a bill that needs to be caught up," Allman said. "And she's got some bills that need to be caught up."
Allman claimed his prize Friday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Allman said he may just buy his 18-year-old granddaughter another vanilla malt to celebrate.
"I think [I'll] probably spring for another malt for ya," Allman chuckled.
The winning numbers in the $40 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Wednesday were: 1-6-8-12-35 and Powerball 3.
There were no jackpot winners for that night's drawing. This Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $60 million.
Allman won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Allman would have multiplied his win to $40,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
