Kim Puhrmann Wins a $30,000 Top Prize Playing the "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - An O'Brien County woman said she's been dealing with a few health issues and that her $30,000 win couldn't have come at a better time.
Kim Puhrmann of Paullina claimed the 47th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game.
"It came at perfect timing. I have a feeding tube and lots of health issues," Puhrmann said. "And so this is just perfectly awesome."
Puhrmann, 43, said at first she thought she'd matched nine words for a $3,000 prize and asked her husband, Shawn, to double-check her ticket.
"So I told my husband, 'You need to look at this because there's no way that I have just done what it says I have,'" Puhrmann explained. "So I didn't tell him and he goes, 'Well, what do you think you won?' I said, 'Well I think $3,000, but I'm not for sure.'"
But Shawn had counted 10 words, meaning she had just won $30,000. Puhrmann had purchased her winning ticket at Dyno's, 222 N. Clark St. in Paullina and took the ticket back to that retailer just to make sure it was real.
"I made them scan it five times to make sure," Puhrmann said through tearful eyes.
Puhrmann claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake. She said she plans to use part of her winnings to thank her family, who have been so understanding and helpful throughout her ongoing health issues.
"Because my husband and kids have been so good ever since the feeding tube and everything, I want to get them all something nice," Puhrmann said. "And pay bills."
