Randy Brown Wins Big Prize in May 11 Powerball® Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Colfax man joked with his mother that he was the winner of a $10,000 prize in the May 11 Powerball drawing. Little did he know, he was right.
"They said somebody in Colfax won ten grand," Randy Brown explained. "And I just told her, 'Well, that was me. I'm going home to get it.' I didn't know."
Brown, 60, said he randomly picked some numbers and has been playing them for the past seven months. And even though he's now won using them, he doesn't have any plans to change them up.
"I figure if I hit again, or whatever, or if somebody else wins it, then I'll change my numbers more than likely," Brown said.
Brown said his wife, Rebecca, called her mother first and Brown called his dad to share the good news with them. He said they thought he was kidding since Brown is kind of known as a jokester in the family.
"I do that a lot," he said.
Brown purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 501 W. State St. in Colfax. He claimed his prize Thursday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines.
Brown said he doesn't have any big plans for his winnings yet.
"Just gonna take care of my bills and put it in savings for a while," he said.
The winning numbers in the $279 million Powerball jackpot drawing on May 11 were: 6-13-19-23-43 and Powerball 16.
There were no jackpot winners for that night's drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $40 million.
Brown won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Brown would have multiplied his win to $40,000.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
