Hazel Snead Wins Top Prize Playing the "Super Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Bettendorf woman got a belated birthday surprise when she won a $50,000 lottery prize.
Hazel Snead said she turned 44 on Sunday and won her big prize on Tuesday. She claimed the twelfth of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery's latest "Super Crossword" instant-scratch game.
"I had to find somebody to help me. We wrote the words down and everything," Snead explained. "And sure enough."
Snead said she waited to share the news until she had her ticket checked at her local retailer.
"I gave her the ticket and she said, 'Girl!' And we jumped up and down. And hollered some more," Snead said.
Snead claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She purchased her winning ticket at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, 3232 Utica Ridge Road in Bettendorf.
Snead, who works as a caregiver at The Fountains Senior Living Community, said she knows just how she'll spend her winnings.
"I need a new car. So I'm going to get me a new car," she said. "Then I might try to find me a house to buy. And that's about it. Take me a vacation."
Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.
