Webster County Woman Starts Morning With $50,000 Win

Patsy VanEvery Wins Top Prize Playing the "20X The Money" Scratch Game

Patsy VanEvery   Hear Patsy tell her story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Webster County woman said her brother invited her to breakfast Sunday morning. On the way home, she bought a "20X The Money" instant-scratch ticket and won a $50,000 lottery prize.

Patsy VanEvery claimed the second of 12 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's 20X The Money scratch game. She stopped to make her purchase at Coalville Stop-N-Shop, 23930 Boies St. in Fort Dodge on her way home to Duncombe.

"I had a couple of scratch tickets from before. And I thought, well, just trade them in and get $5 worth of tickets," VanEvery said.

VanEvery, 64, said at first when she saw the "20X" symbol, she thought she'd won $5 times 20 for a $100 prize.

"Then I got done scratching and I scratched the money part off and it said '$2,500,' and I started shaking," she said.

VanEvery immediately took her ticket back to the retailer to have it validated.

"I went back and I won $50,000!" she said. "My brother said we were going to have a perfect day and we did."

VanEvery, a retired glove maker from Ansell Hawkeye Glove Manufacturing, claimed her prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.

VanEvery said family is her main priority when it comes to her winnings.

"Share with my kids, first of all. First and foremost," she said. "And, I don't know, maybe pay my car off, or a couple things."

"20X The Money" is a $5 scratch game. Players try to match any of "your numbers" to any of the "winning numbers" to win the prize shown for that number. If they find the "stack of cash," they win that prize instantly. If a player finds a multiplier symbol of 2X, 5X, 10X or 20X, they multiply the prize shown by that symbol. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.74.

Ten top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in 20X The Money, as well as 119 prizes of $1,000, 204 prizes of $200 and more than 600 prizes of $100.
