Anamosa Man Stops To Buy Treat For Grandchildren, Wins $30,000 Prize

Melvin Grassfield Wins Top Prize Playing the "Gold Miner" Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Anamosa man said he stopped to get his two grandsons a treat on their way home Thursday and picked up a lottery ticket for himself. He ended up winning a $30,000 lottery prize.

"We went back to our house. And I was sitting there scratching it and that's when I found out," Melvin Grassfield said.

Grassfield claimed the second of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's new "Gold Miner" instant-scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 500 E. Main St. in Anamosa.

This isn't Grassfield's first big lottery win. In August 2000, he claimed a $25,000 top prize on the "Magic Charm Bingo" scratch game but says it's still just as exciting to win now as it was nearly 12 years ago.

"Yes it is. I guess that's why I keep buying 'em," he said. "I know that there are winners out there because I'd had one before."

Grassfield, 66, said he stopped by where his wife, Linda, works that afternoon and shared the good news with her. Her advice was for him to head over to the Iowa Lottery's office in Cedar Rapids that same day and get his prize claimed.

Grassfield, a retired cement worker, said they have some big plans for the winnings.

"Well actually, our youngest daughter is going to get married next year and this will help take care of the cost of the wedding," he said.

Grassfield said he's been pretty lucky all his life. He even shared a few words of advice for those thinking about shaking his hand for a bit of good luck.

"When people do that to me, I've always told 'em in the past, 'I'm just taking your good luck. You aren't getting mine. Yours is just rubbing off on me,'" Grassfield said as he tried to remember who he shook hands with last.

Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in Games 1 through 5. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any Game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.

Ten top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as 20 prizes of $2,500 and hundreds more prizes of $100, $200, $500 and $1,000.
