Joan Golden Wins Top Prize Playing the "Crossword" Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman stopped to buy gas and hadn't planned on purchasing any lottery scratch tickets that day. But she said that as she paid for her fuel, the clerk asked if she'd like a ticket, so she bought one and won a $30,000 lottery prize.
"I went in and I paid for my gas and he said, 'And?'" Joan Golden explained. "I said, 'Oh, give me a 'Crossword.' And then I took it home and scratched it there. I had to look at it 50 times."
Golden claimed the 57th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game.
Golden, 71, who is retired, said she took her ticket back to Hawkeye Convenience Store, 4830 Johnson Ave. NW in Cedar Rapids, to have it checked.
"They were excited for me," she said. "They are a couple of really nice guys up there."
Golden claimed her prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she plans to use her winnings to pay off her car.
"If it can happen to me, it can happen to anybody," Golden stated.
