DES MOINES, Iowa - A Harlan woman said she purchased a couple lottery scratch tickets to help her husband celebrate his birthday and ended up winning a $30,000 prize.

Misty Robertson, accompanied by her husband, Eddy Peterson, claimed the 58th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game.

"He likes to play them and it was his birthday. And we went up and got some lottery tickets," Robertson explained. "We just bought two. We won $3 on the second one."

Eddy Peterson, 43, said at first they thought they'd won a $3,000 prize.

"And then she's like, 'Hey, there's a couple more letters here,'" Peterson said. "So next thing you know there's 10 words, 'Oh my gosh, $30,000.' It was very emotional."

Robertson, 34, who works at Subway, said they took a couple days to get everything together before claiming their prize.

"I had to take some time off work and be responsible," Robertson said. "We just didn't want to go crazy with it."

Robertson claimed her prize Thursday at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Des Moines. She purchased her winning ticket at Durant Street Country Store, 618 Durant St. in Harlan.

"We're going to fix up our house. And we're going to buy a new car. Share with our family. Save some back," Robertson said.

Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.

Thirty-nine top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword, as well as 61 prizes of $3,000 and thousands more prizes of $300 and $100.
