DES MOINES, Iowa - A Worth County man was in disbelief after winning a $30,000 lottery prize Saturday.

Grant Echelberger, 34, of Manly, claimed the 11th of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Word Bank" instant-scratch game.

He said he purchased a couple scratch tickets after work Saturday and scratched them off in the convenience store. He immediately had the clerk verify his winning ticket.

"I just got done working and walked across the street and bought a ticket and when I scratched it, I was quite shocked," Echelberger said. "I actually didn't even scratch the game; I just scratched the code and hit it underneath the scanner."

Echelberger claimed his prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City. He purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 1224 N. Federal Ave. in Mason City.

Echelberger, who works for a Mason City company that installs billboards, said he tried to call his wife, Paige, to share his news, but he couldn't get a hold of her right away because she was visiting family out of town.

"I just told her that she can go shopping because I just hit $30,000," he said. "I don't think she really believed me until she got home and saw the ticket."

Echelberger said he plans to pay off some bills with his winnings, and put some money into savings.

Word Bank is a $3 scratch game. Players scratch the "bank vault letters" area to reveal 18 letters. Then they scratch each letter in the 12 words on the ticket front that corresponds to the "bank vault letters." If a player completes any word using the "bank vault letters," they win the prize shown for that word. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.79.

One top prize of $30,000 is still up for grabs in Word Bank, as well as two prizes of $3,000 and more than 190 prizes of $75, $100, $300 and $500.
