Former Charles City Resident Wins Big Prize Playing the 'Gold Miner' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Minnesota man bought an Iowa Lottery ticket on his way home from a family reunion and ended up winning a $30,000 prize.
Clarence Putney of Carlton, Minn., claimed the third of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Gold Miner" instant-scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 100 Cherry St., in Allison.
Putney, 77, who said he had lived for years in Charles City before moving to Minnesota, also claimed a much smaller prize on a "Bingo Times 10" instant-scratch ticket the same day. Putney said his wife, Denise, likes to scratch off tickets on road trips as a way to pass the time.
"She scratched off the (Gold Miner) one and she says, 'It's a winner, but I'm not going to scratch off how much yet because it's not done yet,'" Putney said. "She scratched it off and she says, 'No way!' She looked at it again and she said, 'Yeah, they're all right.'"
Putney said a stop at the next Casey's store confirmed the winning ticket and they decided to stay another day in Iowa before returning home.
"We got in (the store) and (the clerk) says you have to sign the back of it in case it might be a big one," he said. "My wife says, 'I think it might be a big one', and she just about fell on the floor when she saw it."
Putney is retired after working in construction for a Mason City company. He claimed his prizes Monday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City. He said he plans to spend his lottery winnings on "fishing" and "a little pickup."
Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in Games 1 through 5. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any Game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.
Nine top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as 17 prizes of $2,500 and hundreds more prizes of $100, $200, $500 and $1,000.Return to top↑
