Diana Chaires of Mount Pleasant Wins $30,000 Playing the 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - July 11 has been a lucky date for a Henry County woman.
On July 11 this year, Diana Chaires of Mount Pleasant claimed the 64th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Crossword" scratch game. And on that same date two years ago, she won the same prize in an earlier "Crossword" game.
Chaires said July 11 isn't significant to her otherwise, she just had a "feeling" she should buy a lottery ticket after work Thursday.
"I just started scratching and I'm like, 'No, wait,'" she said. "I kept counting and I'm like, 'I'm going to double check.'"
So how does she feel after her latest big win?
"Lucky, just real lucky," Chaires said.
There is another coincidence for Chaires as well: She bought both $30,000-winning tickets at Z's Quick Break, 201 E. Washington St. in Mount Pleasant.
Chaires said she plans to use her winnings to help pay for her daughter's wedding, buy a new vehicle and share some of her winning with her family.
"I called (my daughter) and I said whatever else you need for your wedding, Momma's got it covered," she said.
Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.
Thirty-three top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword, as well as 47 prizes of $3,000 and thousands more prizes of $300 and $100.Return to top↑
