Okoboji Man Wins $100,000 Lottery Prize

DES MOINES, Iowa - An Okoboji man said he took a few days before claiming his $100,000 lottery prize because he needed some time to calm down first.

"It's not quite fully set in yet, but I'm going to enjoy it," Michael G. Mennenga said Monday as he claimed his big prize.

Mennenga, 65, who recently retired, claimed the fifth of nine top prizes of $100,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "10X Cash" instant-scratch game. He claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Storm Lake and purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 1001 Sanborn Ave. in Okoboji.

Mennenga's long-time girlfriend, Sharon Patton, was with him as he claimed his prize and he said she helped him determine that his ticket had won big. Mennenga said he played the ticket at home on July 10 and couldn't believe his eyes.

"I asked her to look at it and she looked at it and she said, 'Are you kidding me? It says $100,000!'" he said. "And I said, 'I know!'"

"10X Cash" is a $10 scratch game. Players scratch the three different games and bonus areas in the play area on each ticket, trying to uncover matching numbers and symbols or a "10X" symbol to win a prize. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.24.

Mennenga said he and Patton have plans for a new home in their future.

"Right now, we're going to put it in the bank," he said. "We're wanting to find a country home."

Four top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in 10X Cash, as well as eight prizes of $10,000 and thousands of prizes from $100 to $1,000.
