Bettendorf Man Returns From Vacation, Learns He Won $10,000 Lottery Prize

James Strieck Wins Big Prize in June 29 Powerball® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Bettendorf man had a big surprise waiting for him when he returned home from a recent family vacation in Texas.

James Strieck, 71, had purchased a ticket for the June 29 Powerball drawing, but left on his trip before the drawing was held.

"I hadn't paid much attention to the lottery being in Texas and all," he said.

When he returned home he had his Powerball ticket checked at the same convenience store where he purchased it - Gary's Quik Services, 2545 18th Street, in Bettendorf - and discovered that he had won a $10,000 lottery prize. Strieck claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

The winning numbers in the $50 million Powerball jackpot drawing on June 29 were: 8-28-30-53-56 and Powerball 16.

There were no jackpot winners for that night's drawing. Wednesday's estimated jackpot is $116 million.

Strieck won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Strieck would have multiplied his win to $40,000.

"Now I think I'm a firm believer in playing the multiplier," he said.

Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.

Strieck said he doesn't have a set numbers he regularly plays. He said he has played "easy pick" for the last several years.

Strieck said he called his daughter, who lives in Davenport, to share his good news.

"I didn't want her to read about it in the paper or anything, so we talked to her that night and let her know," he said. "She was surprised and very elated that we had won."

Strieck and his wife Marcia said they plan to tackle some minor remodeling projects at home with their lottery winnings.

"It was obviously very exciting for us because I'm semi-retired and somewhat limited in our income and my wife is planning to retire in about a year," Strieck said. "It helps with our future plans."

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
