Linda Robinson of Cedar Rapids Wins Top Prize Playing the 'Gold Miner' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - News of a Cedar Rapids woman's big lottery win spread quickly throughout the Hy-Vee store where she works.
Linda Robinson, 60, claimed the fourth of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's "Gold Miner" instant-scratch game. She purchased her winning ticket Tuesday at Hy-Vee, 4035 Mt. Vernon Road SE, in Cedar Rapids, where she works. She claimed her prize Tuesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
"About all I can say is that it was very overwhelming," Robinson said. "Just from the fact that I won that much."
Robinson said she scratched off her winning ticket during her break and immediately showed one of her supervisors. He suggested that she double-check her winning ticket at the store's lottery terminal.
"The girl who scanned it - her mouth just dropped open," she said. "She couldn't believe (it)."
After that, news quickly spread to the other store employees.
"I think everybody in the store knows," Robinson said. "Everybody's come and congratulated me and said it couldn't have happened to anybody who deserved it more."
Robinson said she also shared her news with her husband, George, and sent a photo of her winning ticket to her children.
"My one daughter texted me back, 'Uh, holy crap! Congratulations!'" she said.
Robinson said the lottery winnings will help her out financially. She also said she plans to share some of her winnings with her children.
Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in the five games on each ticket. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.
Eight top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as 16 prizes of $2,500, 23 prizes of $1,000 and hundreds more prizes of $100, $200 and $500.Return to top↑
