Connie Carter Claims Top Prize in 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Boone woman used the $5 she won on an Iowa Lottery instant-scratch ticket to purchase a "Super Crossword" ticket and ended up winning a top prize of $50,000.
Connie Carter, 44, said she thought she only won $500 at first.
"Then I started counting (the words)," she said. "Found out that it was 10!"
Carter said she went to a retailer to verify her winning ticket and when the clerk told her she won $50,000, she "started shaking."
Carter claimed the 23rd of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery's Super Crossword scratch game. She claimed her prize Friday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.
Carter purchased her winning ticket at Kum & Go, 1704 S. Story St. in Boone.
Carter and her husband, Jerry, said the lottery winnings will be used to help purchase a house in Boone.
"We want a house, we don't want to live in an apartment anymore," Carter said. "It will be a nice down payment."
