Cedar Falls Man Checks Old Tickets, Wins $10,000 Lottery Prize

Chris Schreck Wins Big Prize in Sept. 14 Powerball® Drawing

Chris Schreck   Hear Chris tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Falls man had a pile of old Powerball tickets at his house that he decided to check earlier this week, and discovered he had a $10,000-winning ticket from a drawing last month.

Chris Schreck, 41, said he regularly plays Powerball, but only immediately checks his ticket if the jackpot is won in a particular drawing. The rest of his tickets, he said, are tossed aside to be checked later.

Schreck's $10,000-winning Powerball ticket was from the drawing on Sept. 14. The winning numbers in that drawing were: 1-17-25-37-44 and Powerball 20. Saturday's estimated Powerball jackpot is $186 million.

"Since I didn't win the big one, I didn't check it for about a month," he said. "For some reason I checked it a couple nights ago and darn near fell out of my chair."

Schreck, who works for an agricultural lending company in Cedar Falls, matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Sept. 14 drawing to win a $10,000 prize. He purchased his winning ticket at Thunder Ridge Ampride, 2425 White Tail Drive in Cedar Falls - the store where he regularly buys tickets.

Schreck claimed his prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"It's my birthday and I get to pick up a check for $10,000 so I can't complain," he said.

Schreck and his wife, Kristie, said they plan to treat their children to a pizza party, pay some bills and take a trip with their lottery winnings.

Schreck said he also plans to continue playing Powerball.

"You get a little taste of winning, you want to keep going," he said.
