Kathryn Odem Wins Top Prize Playing 'Queen of Spades' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Marengo woman decided to purchase an instant-scratch ticket with a newspaper and the decision paid off.
Kathryn "Jane" Odem, 69, purchased a "Queen of Spades" scratch ticket Sunday at Big G Food Store, 310 W. Dillon St. in Marengo. She said she scratched off the ticket in her car and ended up winning a $50,000 top prize.
"I couldn't believe it. I just sat there - I didn't scream," she said. "I just looked at it and I thought I must not be seeing this right. I just couldn't believe it. I just stared and stared at it."
Odem said she took her winning ticket home to have her husband, Daniel, double-check it. She also had one of her daughters confirm it.
Odem claimed her prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She claimed the eighth of 11 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Queen of Spades game.
Odem, who is retired, said her lottery winnings will be used to pay for a car that she recently purchased. She also plans to share some of her winnings with her children.
Queen of Spades is a $5 scratch game. If players match any of "your numbers" with any "winning numbers," they win the prize shown for that number. If they find the "2X" symbol, they win double the prize shown for that symbol. If they find the red "Q" symbol, they win four times the prize shown for that symbol. If they find the "joker" symbol they win all 15 prizes automatically. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.74.
Two top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Queen of Spades, as well as 35 prizes of $1,000, 52 prizes of $200 and 99 prizes of $100.Return to top↑
