DES MOINES, Iowa - A Dubuque man decided to purchase an instant-scratch ticket while waiting for his dry cleaning and the decision paid off.

Mark Johnson, 57, said he bought a couple of "Queen of Spades" tickets out of a lottery vending machine at Courtesy Cleaning Center, 3398 Kennedy Circle in Dubuque and scratched them off while waiting. He ended up winning the ninth of 10 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Queen of Spades game.

"You got time so I got some (tickets) and sure enough this one came up," he said.

Johnson said he looked at his winning ticket numerous times to confirm he had won a top prize. He also had his sister double-check it.

"It was great," he said. "It was a nice surprise for sure."

Johnson, who works at Printers Plus in Dubuque, claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Mason City.

Johnson said he plans to use his lottery winnings to pay bills and help purchase a house.

Queen of Spades is a $5 scratch game. If players match any of "your numbers" with any "winning numbers," they win the prize shown for that number. If they find the "2X" symbol, they win double the prize shown for that symbol. If they find the red "Q" symbol, they win four times the prize shown for that symbol. If they find the "joker" symbol they win all 15 prizes automatically. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.74.

One top prize of $50,000 is still up for grabs in Queen of Spades, as well as 34 prizes of $1,000, 52 prizes of $200 and 96 prizes of $100.
