Jessica Castillo Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Perry woman knew she had a winning Iowa Lottery instant-scratch ticket, but she wasn't expecting it to be for a $30,000 top prize.
"We only thought we had won $3,000," Jessica Castillo, 30, said. "I had missed one letter and the (clerk) said, 'No, you won $30,000!' I'm still kind of in shock I guess."
Castillo claimed the 83rd of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the "Crossword" scratch game. She claimed her prize Jan. 6 at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. Her husband, Julio, joined her.
Castillo, a stay-at-home mother, said she purchased her ticket Jan. 5 at Kum & Go, 1115 Iowa Highway 141 in Perry, and scratched it off the same day.
"I looked at it and I was like, 'No, it's not possible,'" she said. "Then I double-checked and triple-checked and finally we went back to the store and checked."
Once her winning ticket was confirmed, Castillo said she shared the news with her family.
"They're all excited and they actually thought we were lying," she said. "Nobody honestly believed us."
Castillo said she plans to save some of her lottery winnings and use the rest to pay bills.
