James Sassatelli Wins Big Prize Playing the '500 Grand' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man said he was so excited to find out that he won a big lottery prize on an instant-scratch ticket that his hands were shaking.
"I couldn't get my hands to work," James Sassatelli, 42, said. "I literally ran across the street to the neighbor to have her check for me and she went crazy too. So I knew it was right!"
Sassatelli won a $10,000 prize on a "500 Grand" scratch ticket that he purchased at Casey's, 5340 NW Beaver Drive in Johnston. Sassatelli said he went back to that Casey's store and hugged the clerk who sold him the winning ticket.
"I'm going to take him out sometime," Sassatelli told lottery employees Wednesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He claimed the 13th of 17 prizes of $10,000 available in the 500 Grand game.
Sassatelli, who works for United Rentals in Des Moines, said he had fun sharing his good news with his fiancée, Jessica George.
"I said, 'At first I thought I won $100.' She's like, 'Oh my gosh that's great!'" he said. "I said, 'I was mistaken.' And she said, 'Oh, that's too bad.' I'm like, I won $10,000!"
Sassatelli said he plans to save a majority of his lottery winnings.
"500 Grand" is a $20 scratch game. If players match any "winning numbers" to any of "your numbers" in the play area on the front of each ticket, they win the prize shown for that number. If they find the "star" symbol they win that prize instantly, and if they find the "5X" symbol, they win five times the prize shown for that symbol. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.07.
Two top prizes of $500,000 are still up for grabs in the 500 Grand game, as well as four prizes of $10,000, 54 prizes of $1,000, 98 prizes of $500 and hundreds of prizes of $100.Return to top↑
