Gary Hawhee Wins Top Prize in 'X-Treme Winnings' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A southwest Iowa man decided to purchase an instant-scratch ticket while filling up with fuel at a local convenience store and the decision paid off.
Gary Hawhee of Bedford claimed the second of eight top prizes of $30,000 in the Iowa Lottery's new "X-Treme Winnings" game. He claimed his prize Jan. 17 at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.
"I scratched it, but I had no idea I'd won," Hawhee, 84, said.
Hawhee said he double-checked his winning ticket by using a self-scanner at the retailer where he purchased it - Casey's, 608 Madison St. in Bedford. He also had a clerk double-check for him.
"I was stunned," he said.
Hawhee, a salesman for an advertising company based in Texas, said he plans to invest with some of his winnings, and save the rest.
X-Treme Winnings is a $3 scratch game. Players scratch the "X-Numbers," then scratch all the numbers in each game that exactly match any of the "X-Numbers." If a player matches all of the numbers in any game, he/she wins the prize for that game. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.76.
Six top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in X-Treme Winnings, as well as 25 prizes of $1,000, 22 prizes of $500 and hundreds of prizes between $100 and $200.Return to top↑
