Wayne Ruroden Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A northeast Iowa man knew he had a winning "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket, but he didn't initially see that he had won a $30,000 top prize.
"I looked again and I said, 'Well, there's an 'r' and it was the word 'agree' and I missed the letter 'r' in it,'" Wayne Ruroden of Waukon said. "So I said, 'Oh my gosh! Now it's 30,000!'"
Ruroden, 67, said he didn't believe what he saw, so he had a friend who owns a convenience store double-check his winning ticket.
"He looked and looked and he gave me a look," Ruroden said. "I knew then it was good."
Ruroden, who is retired, claimed the 85th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Crossword game. He claimed his prize Jan. 17 at the lottery's regional office in Mason City.
Ruroden purchased his winning ticket at the same retailer where he regularly buys lottery tickets - Kwik Star, 101 Rossville Road in Waukon.
Ruroden said he and his wife, Jane, will use the lottery winnings to purchase a new vehicle.
Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.
Ten top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (game #756), as well as 11 prizes of $3,000, 100 prizes of $300 and hundreds of prizes of $100.Return to top↑
