Eastern Iowa Woman Wins More Than She Originally Thought, Takes Home $50,000 Lottery Prize

Nancy West Wins Top Prize on 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game

DES MOINES, Iowa - An eastern Iowa woman knew she had a winning "Super Crossword" instant-scratch ticket, but she wasn't expecting it to be for a $50,000 top prize.

"First I thought I won $500," said Nancy West of Blue Grass.

West said when she double-checked her winning ticket she noticed that she forgot to scratch off two letters and that with it included she'd won a much bigger prize than she originally thought.

"I said, 'Holy crap I got two more words! I won the jackpot!'" she said. "I said, 'I won $50,000!' I couldn't believe it. I've never won that kind of money before."

West, 61, said she purchased her winning ticket Jan. 18 at Casey's, 301 E. Mayne St. in Blue Grass. She said she took her ticket back there to have it double-checked before she started to celebrate.

"It was the lucky No. 7 ticket I won on," she said.

Even though her ticket was verified as a $50,000 top prize winner, West said she still felt anxious as she waited to claim her prize.

"I was so excited I couldn't sleep all weekend," she said.

West claimed her prize Jan. 21 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She claimed the 25th of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Super Crossword game.

West, who owns a used car lot in Davenport with her husband, Jake, said her lottery winnings will be used to make some home repairs.

Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.

Seven top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Super Crossword, as well as 20 prizes of $5,000, 33 prizes of $500 and 258 prizes of $100.
