Jennifer Buhrman Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Rapids woman said she plays "Crossword" instant-scratch tickets for fun and she never imagined that she'd win a $30,000 top prize.
"I was one of those that was always scratching them off and thinking, 'They don't even have a $30,000 winner, what are they talking about?'" said Jennifer Buhrman. "Now I know."
Buhrman, 47, said she purchased a Crossword scratch ticket Jan. 30 at Casey's, 641 Edgewood Road in Cedar Rapids and knew right away she was a winner.
"As I was scratching it off, I had eight letters left and I had seven words already. I had all the vowels except for the letter 'e,'" she said. "When I scratched the (next) letter off and it was the 'e,' I was freaking out. I was like, 'Oh, my God! I got the big winner!'"
Buhrman said she used a self-scanner in the store to double-check her winning ticket before she started to celebrate.
"I was shaking so bad, so excited, that I couldn't have counted how many words I had if I wanted to," she said. "As soon as I put it in the machine and I (saw $30,000), I was screaming and screaming and screaming!"
Buhrman, who works as a nurse at CarePro Health Services of Eastern Iowa, claimed her prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. She said she plans to use her lottery winnings to pay bills and purchase a newer car.
