Troy Smith Claims First Top Prize in New 'Money Magnet' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Fort Dodge man said he decided to buy an instant-scratch ticket while taking a break at a gas station in Eagle Grove and the decision paid off.
Troy Smith, 46, said he scratched off his "Money Magnet" ticket and couldn't believe what he saw. Smith claimed the first of eight top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.
"I just kept re-checking the numbers over and over and seeing the prize amount, I couldn't believe it," Smith told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Wednesday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City. "So, I had to go back inside the store to re-check it."
Smith went back inside the convenience store where he purchased his winning ticket - Kum & Go, 1120 S. Commercial Ave. in Eagle Grove - to verify he had won. Once it was confirmed that he had a $30,000-winning ticket, Smith said he started to celebrate in the parking lot.
"My kid was in the back seat saying, 'You're not going to win. You're not going to win,'" he said. "And he didn't know how to react when I started screaming in the parking lot."
Smith said he immediately shared his good news with his fiancé, Jonni, but she thought he was lying.
"She didn't believe me until I got home and showed her the ticket," he said.
Smith, who works at a hog confinement near Fort Dodge, said his lottery winnings will be used to pay for his upcoming wedding and a down payment on a house.
Money Magnet is a $3 scratch game. Players try to match any of "your numbers" to the numbers that match exactly in each of the four games in the playing area. If a player matches all of the numbers in a game, they win the prize shown for that game. Each game is played separately. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.73.
Six top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Money Magnet, along with 22 prizes of $1,000 and 180 prizes of $100.Return to top↑
