Powerball® Comes Through For Sioux City Man Twice In Two Weeks

Ed Matney Wins $10,000 Prize in Feb. 19 Drawing, Just Days after Winning Football Trip Package

  Hear Ed tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Lottery's Powerball game has been very good to a Sioux City man who in the last two weeks has claimed a trip package as well as a big cash prize playing the game.

Ed Matney, 62, was selected Feb. 11 as one of the six winners in the lottery's "Hall of Fame" promotion, which players entered with codes from qualifying Powerball purchases. And on Friday, Matney claimed a $10,000 prize from the monster $425.3 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Feb. 19.

Matney is a regular Powerball player, but said he wasn't expecting to win anything, let alone two big prizes in the last two weeks.

"I'm fortunate and happy that I did," Matney told lottery employees Friday as he claimed his latest cash prize at the lottery's regional office in Storm Lake. "This one was a little more shocking because it's so close to (the trip package)."

Matney, a retired business owner, matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Feb. 19 drawing to win a $10,000 lottery prize. He said he regularly checks his tickets on the lottery's website, but when he discovered Thursday that he had won a $10,000 prize, he went back to the retailer to double-check.

"And then I realized, 'Yeah, it was true!'" Matney said.

The winning numbers in that night’s Powerball drawing were 1-17-35-49-54 and Powerball 34. A lucky ticket sold in California won the jackpot. Wednesday's jackpot is an estimated $50 million.

Matney purchased his $10,000-winning ticket at Casey's, 4701 Southern Hills Drive in Sioux City. This is also the same retailer where Matney purchased his Powerball ticket that was one of the winners in the lottery's promotional drawing on Feb. 11. Matney said his most recent lottery winnings will be used as spending money for the trip he won from the lottery.

As a promotion winner, Matney received a trip package for four people to the Pro Football Hall of Fame's 50th Anniversary Fan Festival on May 3-4 in Ohio. Matney, and other Iowa Lottery players, entered the Hall of Fame promotion online via the lottery's website using entry codes that were automatically generated on eligible Powerball tickets.

Matney said one of his friends, his oldest son and a friend of his son will join him on the football trip this spring. He said he's looking forward to meeting several football greats, including Terry Bradshaw and alumni of the University of Nebraska, his favorite college football team.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
