Warren County Man Wins $30,000 Lottery Prize

Darrell Eshelman Claims Top Prize in New 'Money Magnet' Scratch Game

Darrell Eshelman   Hear Darrell tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Warren County man said he scratched off an instant-scratch ticket while waiting for his car to get serviced at a local dealership, and ended up winning a big lottery prize.

Darrell Eshelman of New Virginia claimed the third of eight top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's new "Money Magnet" game.

Eshelman said he knew right away that he had won a big prize, but remained calm until he left the car dealership.

"I checked it out and I was pretty sure," Eshelman told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.

When Eshelman got home, he shared his good news with some of his closest friends.

"They kind of made fun of me," he said. "They called me a little lucky."

Eshelman said he purchased his winning ticket Monday at Kum & Go, 1453 Highway 207 in New Virginia. He said he plans to save his lottery winnings.

Money Magnet is a $3 scratch game. Players try to match any of "your numbers" to the numbers that match exactly in each of the four games in the playing area. If a player matches all of the numbers in a game, they win the prize shown for that game. Each game is played separately. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.73.

Five top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Money Magnet, along with 22 prizes of $1,000 and 176 prizes of $100.
