DES MOINES, Iowa - A Waterloo woman said she purchased a "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket at a convenience store in Evansdale, instead of the store in her neighborhood where she typically shops, and the decision paid off.

Amy Feehrer, 37, claimed the sixth of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's newest Crossword game. She said she purchased her winning ticket Sunday at Station Mart Liquor and Tobacco, 3594 Lafayette St. in Evansdale.

"I was driving right by that one," she said. "I just didn't want to go out of my way."

Feehrer said she starting scratching off her ticket and knew she had won a prize, but she didn't know just how much she had won until she had it verified at a retailer.

"I was trying to count the (words). I knew I won something," she said. "I thought I only won either $300 or $3,000."

A lottery terminal confirmed that Feehrer had a $30,000-winning ticket, but she said she didn't fully believe it until she claimed her prize Tuesday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

"I still really wasn't sure because there was a lot of zeroes," she said.

Feehrer, who works at Valley Services in Waterloo, said she hasn't decided how she'll use her lottery winnings.

Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.

Seventy-nine top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword (game #805), as well as 122 prizes of $3,000 and thousands of prizes of $300 and $100.
