DES MOINES, Iowa - A Nebraska grandfather took his granddaughter to get a treat at a Sioux City grocery store and ended up winning a big lottery prize.

Dan Herfel of South Sioux City, Neb., said he purchased a "Gold Miner" instant-scratch ticket Feb. 1 at Hy-Vee, 3401 Gordon Drive in Sioux City, and scratched it off before leaving the store. He ended up winning the eighth of 12 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.

"I told (my granddaughter), 'I've never played this one before. I'm going to try it.' And sure enough - it happened," Herfel, 61, said.

Herfel took his winning ticket to a clerk to have it verified before he called his wife, Tina.

"I just kept telling (the clerk), 'Don't mess with me. Are you sure? Do not do this to me,'" he said. "She goes, 'No, I'm 100 percent sure.'"

Herfel said once his winning ticket was verified, he started to celebrate inside the store.

"We were in the Hy-Vee and of course I'm kind of jumping around and doing stuff," he said. "(My granddaughter) goes, 'Grandpa, you're embarrassing me!'"

Herfel, who works at a pet food manufacturer in North Sioux City, S.D., claimed his prize Feb. 3 at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He said his lottery winnings will be used to pay off his truck and to take his granddaughter to Walt Disney World®.

Gold Miner is a $3 scratch game. Players reveal the 22 'your symbols' and then scratch all the matching symbols in the five games on each ticket. If a player matches all the symbols on any one horizontal line in any game, they win the corresponding prize for that line. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.84.

Four top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Gold Miner, as well as five prizes of $2,500, 11 prizes of $1,000, 21 prizes of $500, 58 prizes of $200 and 58 prizes of $100.
