DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines man said his lucky number recently paid off on an instant-scratch ticket.

Raymond Stacey, 47, said he had a friend purchase him a couple of "Super Crossword" scratch tickets Wednesday at Git-N-Go, 2700 Indianola Ave. in Des Moines.

"My lucky number is 33 and the tickets that he brought me were 31, 32 and 33, which was real odd," Stacey said. "I scratched No. 33 first and it was $50,000!"

Stacey claimed the 31st of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Super Crossword game. He claimed his prize Thursday at the Iowa Lottery's headquarters in Des Moines.

Stacey said he scratched off his ticket and didn't believe that he had won a $50,000 top prize.

"At first I only counted eight of the words and thought I won $500, which I was very happy about," he said.

Stacey said he asked his wife, Debbie, to double-check his winning ticket before he started to celebrate.

"As we were going over it, we found two more words and I couldn't believe it," he said. "So we sat there and studied for the next two hours, making sure that we were correct."

Stacey said his lottery winnings will be used to pay bills and buy a newer car.

Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.

Three top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Super Crossword (game #804), as well as eight prizes of $5,000, 21 prizes of $500 and 141 prizes of $100.
