Faye Stewart Wins Top Prize in 'Super Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A northeast Iowa woman said she purchased her first instant-scratch ticket in more than five years and ended up winning a $50,000 prize.
Faye Stewart of Oelwein said she was traveling with her husband, her brother-in-law and her sister-in-law Sunday and decided to purchase a couple of scratch tickets to play in the car. She said she purchased a "Super Crossword" scratch ticket after consulting with the clerk at Casey's, 308 W. Mission St. in Strawberry Point on what to buy.
"I said, 'Oh what the heck. I never buy them, give me one,'" Stewart, 49, said.
Stewart said she started scratching off her Super Crossword ticket in the car, but started to feel sick and asked her sister-in-law to finish it.
"She got the (words) that I missed, and she thought that I won $5,000," Stewart said.
Stewart said she had her winning ticket double-checked at a convenience store in Marquette and was in disbelief when the clerk told her it was worth a lot more than she expected.
"She laid it down and she said it was $50,000," she said. "Needless to say I screamed and hollered and then I cried."
Stewart, who works for a nonprofit organization, claimed the 32nd of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the "Super Crossword" game (game #804). She claimed her prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Stewart said she plans to pay off debt with her lottery winnings and share some with her four children.
"I never thought I was a lucky person. I still don't think I'm a lucky person," she said. "I'm just glad luck was on my side."
Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.
