DES MOINES, Iowa - A Cedar Falls man said he had to check his winning instant-scratch ticket multiple times before he believed he had won a $50,000 top prize.

"I had to take about three or four takes," Richard Eifert told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.

Eifert, 65, claimed the eighth of 10 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery's "Instantly Rich" scratch game.

Eifert purchased his winning ticket Friday at Murphy USA, 518 Brandilynn Blvd. in Cedar Falls. He said he took his ticket back there Monday to have it verified and the staff was excited to learn they had sold a $50,000-winning ticket.

"They said, 'Everyone says they never get winners there, now tell them, I sold a $50,000 winner,'" Eifert said.

Eifert, who is disabled, said his lottery winnings will be used to pay off bills.

Instantly Rich is a $5 scratch game. If a player reveals a "thumbs up" symbol, they win the prize shown below that symbol. If a player reveals a "chest" symbol, they win double the prize shown below that symbol. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.41.
