Powerball® Win Provides Boost For Southern Iowa Man's Upcoming Retirement

Terry Newcomb Wins $50,000 Prize in April 5 Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A southern Iowa man said he expected to hear that he didn't win a prize when he checked his Powerball ticket at his local lottery retailer, but he ended up winning $50,000.

Terry Newcomb of Russell said he has followed the same Powerball routine since the game's inception in 1992. He buys a ticket the day of each Powerball drawing at Chariton BP, 107 E. Grace Ave. in Chariton, and has his tickets checked there the following day.

"After the drawing I take it in and have the girl at the local BP station check it for me. I give them a chance to call me a loser and this time they didn't," Newcomb said.

Newcomb matched four white balls and the Powerball in the April 5 drawing to win a $10,000 prize. And since he added the Power Play® option to his ticket for an extra dollar, his prize multiplied to $50,000.

The winning numbers in that night's $70 million Powerball drawing were 11-21-26-33-34 and Powerball 29. The Power Play number drawn was 5. The Powerball jackpot has been climbing since March 26 and has grown to an estimated $94 million for Saturday night's drawing.

Newcomb said the clerk handed him a receipt that said he won $50,000, but he still didn't believe it.

"I'm normally happy if I win enough money to buy more tickets," Newcomb told lottery employees Monday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. "When she handed me the ticket that said $50,000 - there's no way I could believe that was for real."

The clerk assured Newcomb that he had a winning ticket and the store's employees started celebrating with him.

"They were as excited as I was, so it was really interesting to see their reaction because I've never known anyone that has won this kind of money before, so it's quite an experience," Newcomb said.

Newcomb said his lottery win comes at a great time because he is scheduled to retire from Route 65 Harley-Davidson® in Indianola next month.

"Everybody is congratulating me and they all think it's great because this will give me a little boost for my retirement," he said.
