Adam Sloan Wins Top Prize Playing 'Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Linn County man said a co-worker was more excited than he was about winning a big lottery prize.
Adam Sloan, 37, of Alburnett said he bought a "Crossword" instant-scratch ticket April 10 at Casey's, 1201 First Ave. SE in Cedar Rapids and scratched it off during a break at work that night. He ended up winning the 17th of 86 top prizes of $30,000 available in the game.
"Didn't get excited or anything, but there was another gentleman in there with me and he was jumping all over the place; you'd of thought he won it not me," Sloan told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Sloan works an overnight shift at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids and said a co-worker was looking over his shoulder and counting the number of completed words as he scratched them off.
"He said, 'Ah, you got seven words, that's a hundred bucks, that's pretty good,'" Sloan said.
Sloan said he double-checked his ticket and noticed that he had missed a couple of letters which bumped up his word total.
"I counted and I'm like, 'Ah, ten!' He's like, 'Ten - that's $30,000!'" Sloan said. "I'm like, 'Oh, ok'"
Sloan said he participates in a lottery pool at Quaker Oats, but he wasn't a member of the recent winning groups from there. "The Shipping 20" won the biggest lottery prize ever in Iowa with their $241 million Powerball® jackpot back in June 2012 and in October 2012, a group of workers that called themselves the "Quaker 50" won $10,000 in a Powerball drawing.
Sloan and his wife, Karena, just recently purchased a new home and plan to use their lottery winnings towards it.
