SW Iowa Man Buys Lotto Ticket With Lunch, Wins $30,000 Prize

Tim Pfeiffer of Stanton Wins Big Prize in April 19 Hot Lotto® Drawing

DES MOINES, Iowa - A southwest Iowa man said he stopped for lunch at a convenience store last week and decided to purchase a Hot Lotto ticket as well, and the decision paid off.

Tim Pfeiffer, 44, was in Lenox for a work meeting Thursday and purchased his Hot Lotto ticket at Casey's, 501 N. Brook St. in Lenox. He ended up winning a $30,000 prize.

Pfeiffer of Stanton matched all five white balls, but missed the Hot Ball in Saturday's $5.68 million jackpot drawing to win a $30,000 prize. He said he found out that he had won big when he checked his numbers Sunday on the Iowa Lottery's website.

"Rechecked the numbers and the date about five times to make sure and then I hollered for my wife to come look," Pfeiffer told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. "We stood there for several minutes looking it over to make sure that we didn't make a mistake."

Pfeiffer said his wife, Leigh, agreed that they had won a $30,000 prize, but the couple decided to keep the news to themselves until the ticket was verified by the lottery.

"We wanted to come in and make sure that we hadn't made any errors before we told anyone," he said.

The winning numbers in Saturday night's drawing were 8-11-15-20-30 and Hot Ball 11. The Hot Lotto jackpot has been growing since Oct. 12. The game now has an all-cash jackpot with withholding taxes paid, meaning that if the advertised jackpot is $5.81 million, the winner will receive a one-time, lump-sum payment for that full amount.

Pfeiffer, who works for Southwest Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative in Stanton, said his lottery winnings will be used to pay bills.

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
