Laura Green Wins Big Prize Playing New '$100,000 Mega Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A northern Iowa woman said she had no idea her winning lottery ticket was worth $10,000 until she had it verified at a local convenience store.
Laura Green of Clarksville thought she might have won big playing the Iowa Lottery's new "$100,000 Mega Crossword" instant-scratch game, but she didn't know for sure.
In the end, Green claimed the first of 25 prizes of $10,000 in the new game. She purchased her winning ticket Saturday at Express Mart, 205 N. Main St. in Clarksville.
"I kept thinking, 'Well, there's got to be a winner here somewhere, but I couldn't figure it out,'" Green said. "I was about to give up when I looked down at the bottom and thought, 'OK so maybe it's a little more.' And then I looked and thought, '$10,000?'"
The 47-year-old said she handed her scratch ticket to her husband, Kurt, and her son to double-check that she had won big, but they had trouble confirming it.
"They checked it and re-checked it and then re-checked it and we still weren't sure," Green told lottery employees as she claimed her prize Monday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City. "So we had to take it to the store before getting our hopes up."
Green, who is a nurse's aide, said she was relieved to found out that she had won a big lottery prize and plans to use her winnings to pay bills.
The $100,000 Mega Crossword scratch game is a $10 ticket. Players win a prize by uncovering at least four complete words in one or both of the ticket's puzzles. Players can also win a prize by uncovering a "bonus word" in the playing area. If a player uncovers six complete "red" words, he/she wins $100,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.29.
Eleven top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in $100,000 Mega Crossword, as well as 23 prizes of $10,000, 122 prizes of $1,000 and thousands of prizes of $500, $200 and $100.Return to top↑
