DES MOINES, Iowa - The first of seven top prizes of $30,000 in the Iowa Lottery's new "Hole in Won" instant-scratch game was claimed Tuesday by a western Iowa man.

John Fokken of Irwin said he started buying the new game when it debuted earlier this month, and had some success playing it. He purchased his winning ticket June 11 at Manilla Country Store, 347 Main St. in Manilla.

"It was a game that just recently came out and I enjoyed the first one that I did," Fokken told lottery employees Tuesday as he claimed his prize at the lottery's regional office in Storm Lake.

The 47-year-old said he scratched off his ticket and immediately drove to his parents' house to get a second opinion.

"We looked it over about 10 times," he said.

Once he and his parents confirmed that is was a $30,000 winning ticket, Fokken said he shared his good news with his siblings and a few co-workers at Tyson® Foods in Denison.

"I think everybody pretty much knew that the look on my face - that yeah, he can't be lying," Fokken said.

Fokken said his lottery winnings will be used to make some repairs to his home, including a new roof.

Hole in Won is a $3 scratch game. Players scratch the 18 "Your Numbers," then scratch the matching "Winning Numbers." If a player matches at least eight numbers, he/she wins a prize. Matching all 18 numbers yields the game's top prize of $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.66.

Six top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Hole in Won, as well as seven prizes of $5,000, 15 prizes of $1,000, 30 prizes of $300 and 319 prizes of $100.
