Irvin Cook Wins Top Prize Playing New '$100,000 Mega Crossword' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A Story County man said he got queasy after finding out he won a big lottery prize.
Irvin Cook Jr. of Cambridge claimed the second of 12 top prizes of $100,000 in the Iowa Lottery's new "$100,000 Mega Crossword" instant-scratch game.
Cook said he purchased his ticket Saturday morning at Casey's, 1955 E. University Ave. in Waukee, and as he was scratching it off inside the store he knew that he had a winning ticket.
"I thought I had four words which is $30 and I tried to cash it," Cook told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Monday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. "The man said that it was too much - he couldn't cash it."
The clerk told Cook that he won $10,000 and handed him the claim form that printed off from the lottery terminal. Cook couldn't believe it, so when he got into his truck he handed the paperwork to his friend to look over.
"He said, 'No, it's not $10,000, it was $100,000 and that we had won the jackpot on it,'" Cook said. "I was shaking and then my day got better from there."
The 36-year-old said he double-checked his ticket and discovered that he didn't scratch off all of the letters, which yielded two more words and the $100,000 top prize.
Cook, an iron worker for Woodruff Construction, said he doesn't have a plan yet for his winnings.
"Nothing really big planned yet, just try to do something clever or wise with it," he said.
The $100,000 Mega Crossword scratch game is a $10 ticket. Players win a prize by uncovering at least four complete words in one or both of the ticket's puzzles. Players can also win a prize by uncovering a "bonus word" in the playing area. If a player uncovers six complete "red" words, he/she wins $100,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.29.
Ten top prizes of $100,000 are still up for grabs in $100,000 Mega Crossword, as well as 22 prizes of $10,000, 109 prizes of $1,000 and thousands of prizes of $500, $200 and $100.Return to top↑
