SW Iowa Man's Luck Changes With $20,000 Powerball® Win

Kenton Picker Wins Big Prize in Aug. 9 Drawing

Kenton Picker   Hear Kenton tell his story.

DES MOINES, Iowa - A southwest Iowa man said he had no idea that a $20,000-winning Powerball ticket was sold in his hometown until he had his tickets checked at a local gas station.

Kenton Picker stopped Monday at his local Lincoln Farm and Home BP, 515 Sharp St. in Glenwood to fuel up his wife's vehicle and decided to have his Powerball tickets checked as well.

The store sold a $20,000-winning Powerball ticket in the Aug. 9 drawing and had numerous posters throughout the store advertising this news, but Picker admits that he wasn't paying attention and didn't see the signs.

"I said, 'Well, you might as well go ahead and check this,'" Picker said. "And she's like, 'Well, you might be a winner - Did you win the $20,000?' I said, 'What?' I don't ever win anything."

The clerk scanned Picker's ticket and it was the $20,000 winner the store was looking for.

"I said, 'What did I win? $2 or $4?' And she's like, 'No, you won it!'" Picker told lottery employees as he claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs.

Picker matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Aug. 9 drawing to win a $10,000 prize. And since he added the Power Play® to his purchase for an extra dollar, his prize doubled to $20,000.

The winning numbers in that night's $90 million jackpot drawing were: 3-12-31-34-51 and Powerball 24. The Power Play number drawn was 2. One ticket sold in Colorado won the jackpot in that drawing. Saturday's Powerball jackpot is an estimated $50 million.

Picker, who is a maintenance leader in MidAmerican Energy's Council Bluffs office, said he shared his good news with just a couple of close friends and a few of his coworkers, but word traveled quickly.

"It was a very, very nice night," he said.

Picker said he hasn't finalized how he'll spend his winnings, but paying off bills and finishing a home remodeling project are at the top of his list.

"There won't be a problem spending it," he said. "I'm going to be smart with it and actually use it for something, not just go blow it."

Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Players may visit the Iowa Lottery at 2323 Grand Ave. in Des Moines or go to one of the lottery's regional offices in Council Bluffs, Storm Lake, Mason City or Cedar Rapids to claim prizes.
