DES MOINES, Iowa - When a Cedar Rapids man stopped for a soda on his way to a wedding, he also discovered he'd won a $10,000 Powerball prize.
Brett Higgason, 50, said he definitely wasn't expecting to hear he'd won such a big prize in the Sept. 19 drawing.
"I said, 'Hey, I need to pay for this pop. Can you scan this and then give me a new one?'" Higgason said.
The cashier scanned his ticket and the machine announced those key words.
"I heard it say the thing, 'You're a winner!'" Higgason said.
The cashier went around the corner to tell her manager and the assistant manager the good news so they could help congratulate him.
Higgason said they "came back out to the counter and go, 'Congratulations!'"
Not sure what all this meant, the manager informed Higgason he'd just won $10,000.
Higgason's parents were elsewhere in the store at the time. He waited until they got outside to share the news with them.
"They were kind of surprised. My dad just said, 'I've never known of anybody that's won a bunch of money,'" Higgason said.
Higgason said he hadn't really shared the news with anyone else yet. He claimed his prize Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 9001 Sixth St. S.W. in Cedar Rapids. He said he has a few plans for his winnings.
"I'm going to probably put some of it in the bank and give some to charity," Higgason said.
The winning numbers in the $152.1 million Powerball jackpot drawing on Sept. 19 were 1-5-8-39-50 and Powerball 23. Higgason won a $10,000 prize by matching four of the first five numbers and the Powerball. Had he added the Power Play® to his ticket, Higgason would have multiplied his win to $40,000.
There was no jackpot prize winner in the Sept. 19 drawing. The estimated jackpot for Wednesday's drawing is $50 million.
Players can increase their prizes with the Power Play (except the jackpot). The cost is $1 per play. Players who chose the Power Play prior to Jan. 15 and matched four white balls and the Powerball won a $10,000 prize multiplied by the number that was chosen for the Power Play. In the new $2 Powerball game, players who choose the Power Play and match four white balls and the Powerball win a $40,000 prize.
Winning numbers may be checked at the lottery website at www.ialottery.com or through the winning numbers' hot line at (515) 323-4633. Winning numbers may also be checked with lottery retail outlets or by calling the lottery at (515) 725-7900 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
