David Knecht Wins $100,000 Top Prize in Wednesday's Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game Drawing
DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa City man said he nearly fell over when he saw that he'd won a top prize of $100,000 in Wednesday's drawing of Iowa's $100,000 Cash Game.
David Knecht, 57, said he sat down at his computer the night after the drawing to check his numbers.
"Where you can go on your web page and put the numbers in, your winning numbers, or Did I Win? You know, when I put them in there and clicked 'Go,' it popped up a hundred thousand," Knecht said. "Of course I about fell down."
Knecht said he followed up by entering his numbers a few more times, then had his wife do it and just for good measure he had the ticket validated at a nearby retailer. He purchased his easy pick ticket at Hawkeye Convenience Store, 2875 Commerce Drive in Iowa City.
"I checked it this morning on the way to work on one of them little scanners at the place where I bought the ticket," he said. "It come up again, so I knew it was a valid ticket!"
Knecht said he enjoys playing lotto games and is also a member of the Iowa Lottery's VIP Club. He said for now, he's planning to put his money into his checking account and will decide how to spend the winnings later.
"I told [my wife] I might buy myself a new pair of shoes," Knecht said with a laugh.
Knecht has been an employee of Goodwill for 24 years. He claimed his prize Friday at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
Knecht said they've hosted a few foreign exchange students over the years; one from Russia, one from Columbia, two from Brazil, one from Germany and one from Norway.
"We had several foreign exchange students and we've got one getting her PhD," he said. "I was thinking about sending her some money to help her through her college."
Knecht matched all five numbers in the Cash Game drawing on Wednesday to win the top prize. The winning numbers for that drawing were: 6-14-20-28-32.
"I'm just tickled to win," he said.
