Jeff Redford Wins Top Prize Playing '$50,000 Bonus Gift' Scratch Game
DES MOINES, Iowa - A West Des Moines man may have a new favorite Iowa Lottery instant-scratch game.
Jeff Redford, 64, said he decided to buy a "$50,000 Bonus Gift" holiday scratch ticket instead of his usual $5 favorite and the decision paid off.
Redford said he scratched off his ticket while working at a friend's house and "couldn't believe" that he had won a $50,000 top prize.
"I'm legally blind so I just kept looking at it and I thought, 'This isn't right,'" he said.
Redford, a disabled Marine who works from home, claimed the fourth of 12 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery's $50,000 Bonus Gift game. Redford claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He purchased his winning ticket at Kum & Go, 3501 EP True Parkway in West Des Moines.
Redford said he plans to pay off some bills and save the rest of his lottery winnings.
"This is the most I've ever won on anything," he said.
"$50,000 Bonus Gift" is a $5 double-sided scratch game. Players win prizes by uncovering game symbols. The back of the ticket has a bonus game where players can win by matching a "winning number" to any of "your numbers." Each game is played separately. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.62.
Eight top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in $50,000 Bonus Gift, as well as 167 prizes of $1,000 and hundreds of prizes of $200 and $100.
