DES MOINES, Iowa - A western Iowa high school football coach had purchased an Iowa Lottery "Snow Globe Tripler" instant-scratch ticket to give to one of his assistant coaches, but he ended up keeping the ticket for himself and the decision paid off.

David Kuhl, a teacher and head football coach at Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School, said he scratched off his Snow Globe Tripler ticket before school Thursday and ended up winning a $100,000 lottery prize.

"I hit it. Otherwise I might have gave it away," Kuhl, 57, of Mapleton said.

Kuhl claimed the second of eight top prizes of $100,000 available in the Snow Globe Tripler game. He claimed his prize Friday at the lottery's regional office in Council Bluffs. He purchased his winning ticket at Grab-N-Go, 401 S. Fourth St. in Mapleton.

Kuhl said he plays scratch games because of a superstition.

"Whenever I travel to football games I grab a couple and play them on the way up to the game," he said. "Because the first time I won a couple hundred dollars and we won the game."

An assistant coach always joked with Kuhl about his superstition, so Kuhl said he originally purchased the scratch ticket to give to the assistant coach at the team's banquet Thursday.

"I bought a couple and I was going to have him scratch one and me scratch one at dinner for him teasing me, and see if he could do any better than I do," Kuhl said.

Since he ended up playing the two tickets he originally bought, Kuhl said he purchased two more so that he and the assistant coach could scratch them off at the banquet, but then they forgot to do it.

Kuhl and his wife, Brigit, said they plan to use the lottery winnings to help pay off student loans for their adult children.

Kuhl said his son Adam, who won $50,000 last fall on a "Super Crossword" ticket joked with him about his lottery win.

"He said, 'You always have to one up me, Dad! Twice as good as I did,'" he said.
